Education [Early Childhood Centres] Regulations 2008: Subpart 2 47 (1e)


Performance appraisal is the process of identifying, evaluating and developing the performance of employees so that the goals and objectives are more effectively achieved.  An effective appraisal system is a positive means of improving the quality of teaching and learning.

The purpose of performance appraisal is to ensure all teachers meet the Registered Teachers Criteria as determined by the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.


The Directors of Early Childhood on Stafford are committed to ensure that all Teachers are:

  • Actively involved in ongoing training and development
  • Given formal opportunities for feedback on their professional practice

Appraisal Requirements

  • All employees will be active participants in an appraisal process.
  • Appraisal of all  Employees will be completed through a process of Self Appraisal / Director Discussion and “on the job discussion”
  • A written record of all appraisals and appraisal meetings will be completed which will include goals for further professional development and/or ongoing training.
  • Copies of all appraisal reports are confidential to individuals and the Directors and will be held in individual files.
  • All appraisals will be undertaken at least annually.
  • The appraisal process will identify areas for professional development and the professional development that staff have undertaken will be reported through the newsletters.  Staff will also report on their training at staff meetings.
